Friends Of Kenana

Ever since its inception in 1998, Kenana Knitters has regarded the provision of welfare services for its knitters and their families, as a priority.

Using funds generated by the group, we are able to offer numerous health services including a monthly family planning clinic, voluntary counselling and testing for HIV/AIDS, counselling – on an individual and group basis and a homeopathic clinic.

We hold bi-annual eye clinics for which the consultation is free but the cost of the glasses and frames is funded in part by donations and in part by Kenana Knitters. We also make use of many second-hand frames that have been donated by our generous customers world wide.

Many of the knitters have not had the opportunity to experience formal education and so we provide free adult literacy classes and computer lessons on a daily basis. Two of our knitters are qualified adult literacy teachers.

We are in the process of building a new classroom and library for our own use – using an old shipping container that was kindly donated to us.

All our services are offered to all knitters and their family members and we run a small purpose built clinic providing basic medicines at subsidized cost.
